What an AI assistant can and cannot do with your ERP data

The demo is always impressive. The question that decides whether it is useful is what happens when the answer is wrong and nobody can tell.

Where it genuinely helps

The real gain is removing the gap between having a question and being able to ask it. A manager who would never build a pivot table will ask which customers slipped in the last quarter, and getting that answer in seconds changes how often the question gets asked at all.

Where it misleads

A confident sentence is not a verified figure. An assistant that cannot show which records produced a number, or that silently excludes rows a user lacks permission to see, produces answers that look authoritative and are quietly incomplete. That failure mode is more dangerous than an obvious error, because nothing signals it.

What governance actually means here

In practice governance means three things: the assistant respects the same role-based permissions as the ERP, every answer can be traced to the query and records behind it, and there is an audit record of what was asked and returned. Without those, the tool is a demo rather than something finance can rely on.

Frequently asked questions

Can it replace our reports?

It is better thought of as a faster way to reach a question than a replacement for reports that get filed. Recurring, auditable reporting still belongs in defined reports; the assistant is for the questions between them.

Does our data leave the system?

That depends entirely on the architecture, and it is the first question to ask any vendor. Where data goes, what is retained and who can see it should be answerable specifically rather than in general reassurances.
